This Spud’s for You

Late-Night Potatoes in Greenwich Village

You say potato.

We say po-tah-to.

You’re... correct in your pronunciation. Nobody says po-tah-to.

Anyway, you should see this...

Here’re the keys to the land of Potatopia, a place where the mighty potato is a base for everything, opening Wednesday in Greenwich Village.

First of all, that name—just priceless. You imagine a faraway land where King Gratin the Beneficent rules over the spud hamlets and tater towns with a just and starchy hand. And... that would be pretty excellent.

But instead, it’s where you’ll make 3am Saturday stops for something called the Comatoser, which is a bowl of fresh potato-skin chips topped with cheddar, asiago, pepper jack, scallion, red onion, garlic, cilantro, jalapeño (pause for breath), broccoli, bacon, melted cheddar, roasted pepper aioli and ranch. Which isn’t half bad, either.

There’s not much to the place. Just a humble little room with a handful of stools, a few wooden two-tops and a counter full of housemade sauces and delicious things to put on potatoes. Breakfast (an NYC-only lox-sour-cream-and-scallion-on-shoestring-potatoes dish called the Lower East Sider), lunch and dinner are all possible here.

In conclusion: hope you like potatoes.
