About a year before we opened, we went to Chicago to find out about the America's Mattress program. We were quite impressed and excited, but still hesitant. After monitoring our bedding business at our Furniture store for the following 6 months, we found that we just weren't able to capture as much of the market as we wanted and thought that opening a bedding specialty store would fill the gap and give us the growth we were looking for. The thing that impressed me most about our America's Mattress store after opening was the simplicity! After 20+ years in the furniture business it was and continues to be a joy to work that store since EVERY person who walks through the door want to buy, and not only wants to buy, but prefers to buy from a "Mattress Store" (as stated by customers). Our average ticket is better than that of the furniture store and deliveries are simple, quick, and less costly. The other wonderful thing is that I really only need to place 2 or 3 orders a week! 1 for Serta, 1 for Frames, and 1 for Mattress protectors. Can it get much easier? While it took 9 months to move past break even, we now are enjoying the fruits of our labor. The 2 key ingredients in our view are: Advertise a lot and consistently, and have the right man or woman in the box! As long as you aren't willing to accept mediocrity, and are willing to take guidance from your Serta representive, success is there. The old saying that one should put their money where their mouth is, is quite valid. So, true to those words we now have 3 America's Mattress stores with plans for move.
