How It All Started
In 1976, Joan Barnes, a California mother, attempted to find a safe, fun and nurturing place for new parents and children to play together. Unable to do so, she did what any enterprising person would: she started her own! Gymboree Play & Music was born, offering a series of parent/child programs devoted to the physical, emotional and social development of children. Twenty-five years later, with over 500 sites in 26 countries around the world, Gymboree is the world leader in parent/child play and music classes.
